The LEED Certified Charter School of the Dunes was founded in 2003 in the Miller Beach neighborhood of Gary, Indiana. Working closely with the board, Lee Companies managed program development, design professional selection, financing, and ultimately the construction of this unique 66,000 SQ FT K-12 facility.
The school represents an unconventional use for a conventional building style – the pre-engineered metal building. Because of this, the school was constructed for about half the cost of traditional building methods for schools of this size. Lee Companies value engineered every step of the process to keep costs to a minimum.
The school uses an environmentally focused curriculum which fosters knowledge, love, and respect for the environment and the will to preserve it for future generations. The LEED Silver® Certification exhibits the Charter School of the Dune’s commitment to environmental education and sustainability. The main lobby and stairwell feature a mural showing the unique plants and animals of the Indiana Dunes. The Gymnasium features glass overhead sectional doors which open out to the playground area and wetlands beyond. Charter School of the Dunes opened in the Fall of 2013 and serves several hundred students in Gary, IN.
